Job Summary

Under general direction and supervision of up-line personnel, is responsible for the direct supervision of a group of three (3) or more skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled laborers and machine operators involved in forestry work; may operate a truck during emergencies and/or winter weather events to meet goals and objectives.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises the work of subordinate employees engaged in specified forestry work projects or assignments in accordance with the general schedule presented by an immediate supervisor.
  2. Instructs and advises in the technical aspects of the work assignments.
  3. Keeps records of prepared periodic reports relating to the work status.
  4. Inspects area of responsibility for appearance and safety, evaluates the work of personnel, suggests means of eliminating deficiencies and of improving procedures and techniques.
  5. May operate a sander/snow plow during winter operations as needed.
  6. Within ninety (90) days of appointment, must successfully complete Work Zone Safety Training, shall assume adherence to Safety Policies, shall assure work crews utilize safety attire and equipment, shall coordinate all safety related items with the Joint Labor/Management Safety Committee.
  7. Performs skilled work and other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. At least six (6) months experience in forestry/arboriculture, and specific knowledge of the methods, supplies, materials, tools, and equipment,A and effective practices used in carrying out the duties of the assigned position.
  3. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to keep routine records; ability to work from specifications and drawings.
  4. Must possess and maintain a valid State Vehicle Operator’s License. Must also possess and maintain a Rhode Island Arborist License (standard), a valid State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement, and a valid State Hoisting Engineer’s License for Aerial Lift.
  5. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.

Training Requirements

The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
