Job Summary
Under direct supervision of the Commanding Officer of the Bureau, through the application of both theoretical and empirical knowledge to the proper handling of prisoners, engages in responsible work in an effort to optimize both the care and security afforded prisoners; is directly connected with the physical incarceration of prisoners for the purpose of protecting their interests and/or aiding in the continuance of Police investigations.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conducts a search of each prisoner prior to confinement.
- Secures the personal belongings and valuables of each prisoner prior to confinement including any item that may be used to inflict bodily harm to them, i.e., belts, neckties, straps, or other similar articles or implements.
- Prepares a written account to document the detention and property belonging to each prisoner through the utilization of official departmental forms and logs.
- Supplies each prisoner with drinking water and other nutrients.
- Monitors the activity of detained persons to ensure their well-being.
- Maintains the cleanliness and serviceability of the detention unit and its equipment.
- Maintains the safe custody of all money, valuables, or other articles belonging to prisoners; obtains receipt upon surrender of same from the prisoner, officer, or official to whom the prisoner is released.
- Reports any unusual incidents or questionable actions by prisoners, including the detection of any contraband or hazardous material, to the Commanding Officer or Officer-In-Charge.
- Reports any illness or infirmity of prisoners to the Commanding Officer or Officer-In-Charge.
- Reports any condition or hazard that may result in personal injury, fire, or damage to the Commanding Officer or Officer-In-Charge.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously including, but not limited to, providing testimony in court, witness statements, and preparation of activity sheets.
- Must be able to perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Prior experience in detention/prisoner care is preferred.
- Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to interact calmly with verbally combative individuals.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
