Job Summary
Under supervision of a Fire Dispatcher Lieutenant is responsible for receiving incoming telephone calls and telegraph signals, interpreting the information, looking up the apparatus response, and dispatching the appropriate equipment to the incident; responsible for all records concerning alarms and will take and record reading of voltages and current as required. Works a schedule of four (4) days on, followed by two (2) days off, and repeating.
This position is from 11pm-7am
Duties & Responsibilities
- Effectively coordinate emergency dispatch of public safety equipment and personnel.
- Operates public safety radio/telephone communications equipment and office computer system.
- Must be able to spell the streets in the City of Providence.
- Maintains accurate, detailed records of calls, dispatches, and messages.
- Participates in refresher training to retain proficiency and utilization of new techniques.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the on-duty BOC Lieutenant.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Must possess the ability to listen attentively, interpret information, remain calm, think clearly, assess and evaluate situations, organize thoughts, and respond quickly in emergency and stressful situations when receiving information and dispatching information.
- Must have extensive knowledge of City of Providence street locations.
- Working knowledge of all rules, regulations, and procedures applicable to the operation of radio/telephone communications equipment.
- Must be able to use console equipment to transmit and dispatch alarms, computer keyboard and digitizer to monitor alarms, and recording equipment to monitor telephones.
- Must be able to speak clearly and effectively using a microphone and control console.
- Must be able to repeat information accurately using a microphone or telephone and type 30 words per minute.
- Must be attentive to detail and be able to multi-task.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
Training Requirements
Upon Appointment:
- Successful completion of Basic Computer Training course within six (6) months and Intermediate Computer Training within nine (9) months of appointment.
- Successful completion of APCO Institute’s Public Safety Telecommunicator I Training and Fire Communications Course within six (6) months of appointment.
The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
