Job Summary
Under supervision of the Chief Compliance Official, the Deputy Director or Director of the Department of Inspection and Standards, is responsible for the administration of the Division of Compliance, coordination of inspectors, establishing division policy.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for coordination of Compliance Inspectors and assisting in field concerns
- May need to represent the City of Providence in housing court, or other courts , as the City’s representative regarding violations and provide testimony as needed.
- May be called out after hours to perform emergency inspections as determined by department procedures.
- May examine plans of buildings and other structures in order to ensure that they comply with the Rhode Island State Building Code, and other related City codes, and ordinances.
- Assists the Chief in division policy, maintaining records of inspections made, permits issued, and violations cited utilizing data collection software.
- Responsible for maintaining a close working relationship with the Providence City Council,
- Performs, or causes to be performed, inspections of existing structures in accordance with the Rhode Island State Building Code, and other related City codes, and ordinances.
- Performs, or causes to be performed, investigations of damaged to structures, and investigation requests by the Division of Building Inspection to ensure no violation of the Rhode Island State Building Code, and related codes and ordinances exist.
- Prepares, or causes to be prepared, reports, field reports of inspections or notice of violation outlining for the owner, architect, engineer and/or contractor compliance with the Rhode Island State Building Code, and other local codes and ordinances and ensures the corrective measures are completed properly.
- Provides engineers, architects, contractors, and members of the general public information with regard to the requirements of the applicable portions of the Rhode Island State Building Code, and other related local codes and ordinances.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- At least five (5) years of experience, or combination of education and experience in the construction industry, the knowledge of generally accepted building practices, the ability to read building construction plans and specifications and to recognize deviations from such plans in the field,
- At least 5 years of experience as an inspector for the City of Providence, in the department of Inspections and Standards.
- Must have the following certification: (or the ability to obtain within 5 months from date of appointment)
- ICC Property maintenance code inspector
- Residential Building Inspector
- Commercial Building Inspector
- Must be certified by the State of Rhode Island as a Building Inspector I; the knowledge of generally accepted building practices, the ability to read building construction plans and specifications and to recognize deviations from such plans in the field, and the ability to write concise narrative reports for correction of violations observed on the job.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of the Rhode Island State Building Codes, Providence Zoning Ordinance, and other laws and ordinances that are enforced by the Division of Structures and Zoning.Must possess excellent oral communication and writing skills.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
