Job Summary

Under direct supervision of the commanding Officer of the Traffic Bureau, Uniform Division, Providence Police Department, performs work issuing citations for violations of parking regulations.

This position is 4 days on 2 days off rotating schedule – 11 pm- 7 am.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Patrols assigned post and enforces parking violations.
  2. Observes and reports presence of any hazardous conditions in the highway to his/her Commanding Officer or designee.
  3. Enforces all traffic regulations pertaining to overtime parking, parking in prohibited areas, double parking, handicapped violations, and any other violations he/she may observe.
  4. Operates an automated ticket writer and printer, weighing 3-5 pounds, and a police radio.
  5. Must become familiar with the location of all fire alarm boxes on his/her post, the location of hospitals in the City, and must have a working knowledge of the City along with the locations of streets and public buildings in the Central Business District.
  6. Must immediately notify his/her Commanding Officer or designee of damaged or defective parking meters or traffic signs.
  7. Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Ability to spell and write legibly.
  3. Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License.
  4. Must be able to work under variable weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow, and sleet.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively and courteously and establish positive working relationships with co-workers as well as the public.
  6. Must be well groomed at all times, wear the prescribed uniform, and carry the designated equipment.
  7. Must be physically fit, to perform duties and handle responsibilities of position including the ability to move a distance of up to three (3) miles and to stand for durations of up to four (4) continuous hours while in appropriate uniform and carrying equipment.
  8. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.

Upon Appointment: 

  1. Ethics
  2. Customer Service
  3. Sexual harassment, sensitivity, and diversity training  

Sustainment: 

  1. Participation in customer service training every twenty-four (24) months
  2. Participation in sexual harassment, sensitivity, and diversity training
