Job Summary
Under supervision of up-line personnel performs skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of vehicles, trucks, specialized equipment and other apparatus and fixtures; may include supervising and assigning work to subordinate mechanics or machinists or helpers; work also includes the skilled performance of a variety of bench, hand tools, and machine operations requiring a high degree of accuracy and precision, with responsibility for inspecting the work of mechanics in process and upon completion; may operate a truck during emergencies and/or winter weather events to meet goals and objectives.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of hydraulics, truck engines, lawn mowers, electric generators and motors, transformers and other equipment as needed.
- Repairs, rebuilds, and maintains heavy gas or diesel powered automotive equipment such as earthmovers, graders, and rollers.
- Performs skilled non-fabricating electric or acetylene welding operations.
- Plans, assigns, provides technical assistance, and supervises the work of subordinate workers engaged in the maintenance and repair of equipment.
- Assists supervisors in planning and ordering materials and supplies needed for assigned tasks.
- Works independently and at times seeks problem-solving solutions and makes sound decisions in the absence of up-line supervisors.
- Keeps records and makes reports of equipment status, labor, and materials employed.
- May operate a sander/snow plow during winter operations as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent, supplemented with technical courses related to the trade.
- Minimum of six (6) years on the job experience as a journeyman mechanic, machinist, or welder, and considerable knowledge of the methods, supplies, materials, tools, equipment, and effective practices used in carrying out the duties of the assigned position.
- Successful completion of Computer Training Level I course within six (6) months and Computer Training Level II course within nine (9) months of appointment.
- Must demonstrate accomplished skill and knowledge in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel engines, hydrostatic and hydraulic systems, and electrical systems as they relate to vehicular and power equipment operation.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades.
- Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and interpret manuals associated with the maintenance and repair of equipment.
- Ability to prepare written reports; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Must have training and experience in computer diagnostic equipment, anti-lock brakes, fuel injection systems, and welding.
- Ability to work from plans, sketches, blueprints and worn and/or broken parts; skilled in locating defects in equipment and in determining the quality of repair work.
- Skill in the use and care of the standard tools and equipment of the mechanical, machinist, electrical, and carpentry trades and in the operation and care of machines and equipment used.
- Must be able to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake endorsement within three months of appointment. Candidates who possess the CDL at the time of application will be given preference in hiring.
- Ability to become a licensed Rhode Island Vehicle Inspector within one (1) year of appointment.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
