Job Summary

Works under the general supervision of the director or his designee and  is responsible for departmental compliance with the policies and practices of national and state criminal information and law enforcement databases; ensures all person who operate database terminal are properly trained and certified; responds to inquiries, creates reports and performs other related work as required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1.  Adds, deletes, modifies or validates records in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS), Rhode Island Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (RILETS), Department of Motor Vehicles System, Administrative Adjudication System, or the Rhode Island Bureau of Criminal Identification System terminals dependent upon requests for information received from State Police, local or federal law enforcement agencies.
  2. Monitors radio and relays requested information to personnel via electronic mail or two-way radio.
  3. Manages all requests for information received including, but not limited to, missing persons, sex offenders, wanted persons, stolen plates, and stolen vehicles.
  4. Monitors the deletion or modification to records by remote network data entry operators.
  5. Forwards electronic mail transmitted from local, state, or federal on-line agencies to appropriate personnel.
  6. Adds, deletes, or modifies records from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (NLETS), and Rhode Island Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (RILETS) databases; types reports on GUI database.
  7. Calls complainants and verifies and adjusts information pertaining to reported stolen vehicles.
  8. Validates all stolen plates; types reports on GUI database; and performs monthly validation process.
  9. Assists on-line agencies experiencing difficulties following prescribed procedures; troubleshoots problems when they arise.
  10. Assists other agencies with information requests and represents the department during audits.
  11. Maintains the accuracy, completeness, timeliness, security, and proper dissemination of all pertinent information.
  12. Trains staff on all pertinent office systems and assigns passwords.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Minimum of seven (7) years experience as a Control Center Operator.
  3. Must be NCIC, APCO and CTO certified.
  4. Knowledge of applicable State and National policies and procedures governing the use of NCIC, NLETS, RILETS, and all their software and protocols.
  5. A familiarity with the operation of radio receiving/transmitting equipment and ability to use such equipment in accordance with prescribed procedures.
  6. Ability to communicate technical and other data effectively and clearly, both verbally and in writing, and to prepare succinct, coherent and technically accurate reports.
  7. Ability to act with tact and courtesy when dealing with all people at all times.
  8. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.

Training Requirements

The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
