Job Summary

The Supervisor – Water Maintenance Crew reports to the Manager – Distribution (Field Services) and performs responsible supervisory tasks relating to maintenance and installation of facilities and appurtenances in the Providence Water Supply system while maintaining sound safety practices and procedures; plans, organizes, and implements duties and responsibilities of assigned crews; performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provides direct supervision of skilled and semi-skilled workforce including monitoring, timekeeping, report preparation, while planning, organizing, and implementing daily assignments in preventative maintenance, repair, removal, abandonment, replacement and/or installation of hydrants, valves, connections mains and service appurtenances.
  2. Monitors and inspects work performed by outside contractors involved in the maintenance, repair, or improvements to the system.
  3. Prepares accurate work orders and field records, utilizes our asset management system; maintains records of completed assignments.
  4. Reviews and maintains employees’ time and work order records.
  5. Exercises independence, in conjunction with the Manager – Distribution, in directing maintenance, repair, and installation activities related to the water supply and distribution system.
  6. Ensures compliance with all safety standards.
  7. Requires 24-hour, 7-day per week availability with the responsibility of coordinating and ensuring adequate staffing and public notification for emergencies or other non-standard shifts.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1.  Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering, construction management, or a related field and at least 5 years of experience in the maintenance and construction of a water supply and transmission and distribution system.
  2. Alternatively, a candidate may qualify without an Associate’s degree, but must possess at least 7 years of experience in the maintenance and construction of a water supply and transmission and distribution system.
  3. At the time of appointment, must possess and maintain a full D-1 Drinking Water Operator Certificate with the ability to obtain a D-3 Drinking Water Operator Certificate within one (1) year of appointment.
  4. Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License.
  5. Computer skills to include experience with work order systems, asset management systems, word processing, database and spreadsheet programs.
  6. Considerable knowledge in the construction, replacement, installation, repair and maintenance of water system facilities and appurtenances.
  7. Working knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques applicable to water supply construction and maintenance.
  8. Experience reading and utilizing distribution sheets and as-built drawings.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communications skills; management skills.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with individuals and groups, other organizations, and the general public.
  11. Demonstrated ability to plan and complete complex assignments in a timely manner.
  12. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
