Job Summary

The Principal Engineer reports to up-line management and performs professional, highly technical, and complex work for the Providence Water Supply Board (PWSB); provides technical direction and supervision to staff relative to specific projects within Providence Water; performs other related duties as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Performs professional, high-level complex engineering work and engineering management related to all technical and administrative areas of the water works system.
  1. Prepares technical plans and specifications for complex engineering projects.
  1. Provides technical assistance, advice, and supervisory oversight and guidance to all levels of PWSB engineering technical staff.
  1. Participates in the development of Facility Needs Assessments and development of Capital Improvement and Infrastructure Replacement Plans; completes engineering estimates for projects.
  1. Independently plans, organizes, manages, and implements major projects through conception, planning, design, award, contract and construction management, through to full project completion and closeout.
  1. Conducts research and evaluation of various alternative projects approaches and technologies for recommendation to senior level management and the Board.
  1. Acts as the technical liaison of the PWSB to engineering and other consultants.
  1. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Civil/Environmental Engineering.
  1. Minimum of ten (10) years of engineering experience in the water works field with a major water utility, or an equivalent combination of fields of engineering practice applicable to water utility engineering.
  1. Minimum of five (5) years water utility project management experience.
  1. State of Rhode Island Registered Professional Engineer License preferred.
  1. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering as relates to the supply of drinking water.
  1. Ability to read, interpret, and prepare complex engineering plans and specifications.
  1. Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  1. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
