Job Summary
Under supervision of the Crew Chief – Police is responsible for performing all Control Center duties and functions such as complaint desk, Channel -4, NCIC, Teletype, and other related duties as required.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assigns all complaint calls to Police Officers in the street and ensures that the responding Police Officer is aware of the nature of the call, has all information pertaining to the call and the necessary backup.
- Maintains accurate, detailed records of calls, dispatches, and messages.
- Must be able to learn to operate NCIC, office computers, public safety radio/telephone communications equipment, and all office equipment.
- Must be able to learn dispatch on the informational radio channels (four (4) Informational Channels).
- When not dispatching, will perform duties of complaint desk, operator, and other radio room functions.
- Participates in sustainment training to retain proficiency and utilization of new techniques.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Must possess the ability to listen attentively, interpret information, remain calm, think clearly, assess and evaluate situations, organize thoughts, and respond quickly in emergency and stressful situations when receiving information or dispatching information that might be received when life safety is directly involved.
- Working knowledge of all rules, regulations, and procedures applicable to the operation of radio/telephone communications equipment.
- Must have extensive knowledge of City of Providence Street locations.
- Must have computer experience to enter all calls into computer system and type 30 words per minute.
- Must be able to receive requests from Police Officers in rapid succession on all police radio channels.
- Must be able to speak clearly and effectively using a microphone or telephone.
- Must be attentive to detail and be able to multi-task.
- Must submit to and pass an annual BCI check.
- 10. Must be able to perform duties as assigned.
Training Requirements
Upon Appointment
Successful completion of Intermediate Excel, Word, and Outlook training within six (6) months of appointment.
Successful completion of APCO Public Safety Telecommunications I training within six (6) months of appointment.
Customer Service Training, Sexual Harassment, Sensitivity, and Diversity Training
Sustainment
Participation in customer service training every 24 months.
The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
