Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the City Forester, assigns work to the Forestry Crew Leaders and is responsible for the daily dispatch of forestry crews; provides training on arboriculture, tree climbing, equipment and vehicle use, and worker safety; coordinates vehicle fleet maintenance and repair.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develops weekly work plans for tree trimming, pruning and removal of trees and stumps, in coordination with monthly and annual goals set forth by the City Forester and other up-line personnel.
- Coordinates daily dispatch of forestry crews, including emergency calls during off-hours. Tracks and reports daily work reports from Forestry Crew Leaders.
- Utilizes a computerized tree database to prepare work plans and track work progress. Including Asset Essentials and TreeKeeper databases.
- Tracks vehicle and equipment usage, coordinates ongoing inspections, maintenance, and repair. Provides training and instruction on proper usage.
- Provides training to Forestry crew on proper arboricultural methods, tree climbing, bucket and other MEWP operation and safety protocol. Ensures forestry crew achieves and maintain proper license and certifications.
- Communicates with other divisions, city officials, residents, and organizations requesting tree work and other related requests.
- Facilitates and assists with training for the Tree Trimmer Apprentice Program.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in forestry operations, demonstrating progressively increased responsibilities, and supervision of subordinate personnel.
- Ability to organize work plans and to make decisions in accordance with rules, regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State Vehicle Operator’s License. Must also possess and maintain a Rhode Island Arborist License (standard), a valid State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement, and a valid State Hoisting Engineer’s License for Aerial Lift or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months of starting this position.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously and to exhibit good public relations skills in order to work productively with city officials, residents, organizations, and other involved with tree maintenance issues.
- Ability to use email, Microsoft Office Suite Applications and utilize basic computer skills efficiently and effectively.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
