Job Summary

Under direct supervision of upline personnel performs manual work doing a variety of semi-skilled tasks below a journeyman level including routine custodial work and general maintenance duties in public buildings and grounds; and related work as required.

This position is a 2nd shift, 12pm – 8:30pm.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Performs custodial duties in all municipal buildings and grounds as directed including, but not limited to, dusting, sweeping, washing, and waxing floors and walls of offices, halls, and rooms.
  2. Performs related special tasks as requested by upline personnel.
  3. Assists in moving furniture and equipment.
  4. Cleans plumbing fixtures and washrooms, providing soap, towels, and other necessary supplies.
  5. Cleans sidewalks and keeps them clear of snow and ice.
  6. Performs manual labor in lawn and garden maintenance.
  7. Makes minor repairs to buildings and equipment including but not limited to painting.
  8. Washes windows.
  9. Operates boilers of heating system, not requiring licensing.
  10. Assists in the removal of graffiti citywide
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  3. Knowledge of basic building maintenance, cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  4. Must be able to operate heating system and conducts preventative maintenance, not requiring licensing.
  5. Must be able to perform light and heavy manual labor with the ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  6. Must be able to work a reasonable amount of mandatory overtime as needed for emergency situations such as snow removal.
  7. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.

Training Requirements

Upon Appointment:

  1. Must learn how to operate specialized cleaning equipment through on-the-job usage and training within six (6) months of appointment.
  2. OSHA 10 training and obtaining of completion card within six (6) months of appointment or as courses become available.
  3. Individuals whose duties include the use of cleaning solvents, paint removal and other chemical substances must receive statutory training pursuant to the RI Right to Know Law (Title 28, Chapter 21, et seq.) upon appointment.
  4. Customer Service Training.
  5. Sexual Harassment, Sensitivity, and Diversity Training.

Sustainment:

  1. Periodic training in workplace safety and OSHA 10.
  2. Participation in customer service, ethics, diversity/sensitivity training and other professional development to ensure high performance and value-driven operations.

The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
