Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Accounting, the Financial Analyst is responsible to independently initiate and perform a variety of duties and prepare reports on various functional activities throughout the Providence Water Supply Board (PWSB). Compiles, analyzes and reports financial data in relation to the operation, maintenance, and administration of a municipal water system. Oversees and participates in preparing various reports both internally and with other divisions within Providence Water. This may include coordination with other City of Providence Departments, outside vendors, customers, and the general public; performs other related duties as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance and professional independent analysis of work processes, standards of performance, and productivity levels to ensure efficient operation of the PWSB.
  • Maintains general ledgers and records, detailed expenditures, and revenues of various accounts and funds.
  • Prepare reconciliation and related adjustments.
  • Responsible for the timely completion of all adjusting journal entries
  • Researches, analyzes, and responds to inquiries and provides follow-up correspondence and reports.
  • Assist in preparation of financial statements and forecasting.
  • Provides assistance in budget preparation and account maintenance; collects, maintains, and records data for a variety of reports.
  • Assists in the periodic physical counting of the property inventory to ensure compliance with policies and procedures
  • Analyze financial information to facilitate decision-making by finance personnel and present data analysis and interpretation in clear, compelling ways
  • Perform internal audits and assist the city’s controller in the department’s yearly audit
  • Reconciles all bank statements and accounts receivable in the General Ledger
  • Responsible to supervise and direct subordinates as needed.
  • Performs a variety of administrative functions to ensure the efficient operation of the division.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting from an accredited four (4) year College or University
  • Minimum of 5 years of accounting/financial analysis experience is preferred
  • Extensive experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook applications
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment in order to meet regulatory deadlines
  • Strong knowledge of basic accounting theory and financial principles
  • Strong knowledge of accounting practices and procedures
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to assess situations and reach conclusions objectively
  • Strong teaming skills, is eager to learn, contribute and collaborate
  • Strong time management and organization skills, ability to adapt quickly to changing environments, see your responsibilities through to their conclusion
  • Microsoft Excel advanced skills required
  • Ability to work effectively with all department personnel in a cooperative and courteous manner
  • Consistently demonstrate initiative with the ability to work independently with minimal supervisor of instruction
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job
