Job Summary

The Providence Recreation Department is seeking a Deputy Director who can demonstrate a strong familiarity with the array of services the Providence Recreation Department has to offer. The Department is looking for a candidate to manage quality and innovative programming, and system & process improvement. The Deputy Director of Recreation reports to the Director of Recreation and will assist managing budgets, operations, procurement, facilities, infrastructure improvement projects, athletics, programming, systems, processes, and personnel. This is a full-time position that will require availability on evenings and weekends.

Duties & Responsibilities

  •  Trains, supervises, and evaluates work of recreation personnel, including permanent and seasonal staff in both the administrative office and recreation centers.
  • Manages recreation center operations and conducts regular visits to recreation centers during hours of operation M-F 3pm-9pm, Saturday 9am-2pm.
  • Assigns work to both administrative office staff and recreation center directors to ensure effective management of the Department.
  • Regularly makes recommendations regarding opportunities for improvement of recreation operations and programming to the Director.
  • Provides a strategic approach to planning and implementation of new initiatives.
  • Works with recreation center directors to plan, implement, and evaluate improvement projects within the centers and expand programming to include non-traditional sports, arts programming, adult programming, senior programming, family programming, health, education, and workforce development programming.
  • Assists Director in all personnel matters including participation in documentation, grievance solutions, arbitration and disciplinary matters.
  • Manages multi-departmental initiatives including Athletics, Media Content, Community Engagement, Operations, Special Projects, and Facility/Field Usage.
  • Research and maintain current NCAA standards of eligibility for college sports programs, Title IX, and other regulatory athletic standards.
  • Communicates effectively and courteously in person, over the phone, and in email correspondence.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with all staff, constituents, community organizations, and other government officials.
  • Inspects, evaluates and maintain records of recreation programs, events, and activities
  • Works with the Director and other staff in the development of a comprehensive operations and capital plan, as well as preparing the annual operating and capital departmental budget.
  • Assists in emergency response scenarios including membership of the Emergency Advisory Board.
  • Represents the Director of Recreation in his/her absence as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training, sports, or an applicable social science from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the field of recreation or relatable industry, and/or a combination of education and experience that is substantially equivalent to the above.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and as well as the ability to generate reports, presentations, spreadsheets, data, and other required documents.
  • Experience with project management and project management tools/software.
  • General understanding of municipal finance and budgeting, with experience directly planning a budget or part of a team that manages a budget.
  • Knowledge of recreational and/or sports activity that enhances human development through mental and physical conditioning.
  • Ability to adapt to multiple work environments including office environments, political environments, and in recreation centers.
  • Ability to create and maintain relationships with members of the community, organizations, neighboring municipalities, and other city departments.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships withing the Department for coaching and accountability.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Experience working with diverse communities in urban settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree candidate or completion in athletic training, sports, or an applicable social science from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience building custom tools, systems, or processes within the Microsoft suite of products.
  • 1-2 years of experience working for a municipality or government agency.
  • Bilingual preferred
  • Experience with facility maintenance programs, event management software, and asset tagging software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated leadership ability.
