Job Summary
The Policy Advisor reports to the Executive Director of PERA and is principally responsible for project management of PERA’s police oversight initiatives, and providing high-quality, quick turnaround research and analysis in support of PERA’s policy agenda.
A successful candidate will demonstrate excellent problem-solving, critical-thinking, and strategic planning skills. Knowledge of the Providence community, excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a willingness to develop new skills on the job.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop, coordinate, and execute or oversee a wide range of policy initiatives in public safety, and police oversight.
- Serve as a PERA liaison to internal and external stakeholders on a project-specific basis.
- Coordinate with various departments for grant seeking and apply for grants on a project-specific basis.
- Track status of all PERA Policy projects, manage workflow, provide briefings and updates as needed to internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist with new employee training as needed.
- Support the Executive Director in creating short and long-term strategic planning for PERA.
- In collaboration with the Executive Director, develop and deliver briefings, supporting materials, and policy recommendations to the PERA Board, City Council, and or the Commissioner of Public Safety.
- Assess and advise on relevant state and municipal legislation, especially as it relates to Public Safety practices, and Providence Police specific issues.
- Represent the City of Providence to relevant organizations and public agencies, and at relevant events.
- Work with the outside agencies and community groups to maintain open communication and collaborate more efficiently on policies and procedures that directly relate to the PERA’s policy agenda concerning positive police reform.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Minimum Qualifications
- BA/BS degree from a college/university or equivalent professional experience.
- Five years of professional experience in policy and/or project management.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively and to interact professionally with colleagues and external partners.
- Acute attention to detail.
- Knowledge and understanding of Public Safety Practices/Police Oversight is preferred.
- Familiarity with the City of Providence including the neighborhoods and community.
- Exceptional problem-solving, critical-thinking, and strategic planning skills.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple projects concurrently.
- Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and take initiative.
- Ability to learn quickly and be effective in a fast-paced, dynamic, entrepreneurial environment.
- Excellent organization, time management, and follow-up skills.
- Acute cross-cultural awareness, with a demonstrated ability to center equity in communications.
- Excellent research and analytical skills, including proficiency in data analysis and statistics preferred.
- Ability to identify and track key issues of concern to the City of Providence and develop initiatives to address these concerns.
