Job Summary
The Planetarium Programmer facilitates a variety of museum-based programs including planetarium shows, workshops and nature walks for school groups and families. Leads inquiry-based science workshops; facilitates experiences in exhibits; engages in visitor services; and assists in the supervision and maintenance of exhibition spaces, including the Roger Williams Park Museum collections. The work schedule for this position is Sunday through Thursday, 8:30am-4:30pm.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Facilitates hands-on science programs from an extensive menu of workshops and planetarium shows for school groups and museum visitors.
- Assists with the development and facilitation of educational programs including science programming, nature walks and special programs and events.
- Correspondence with schools, education departments, organizations concerning the planning, booking and scheduling of educational programming.
- Assists with the development, installation and maintenance of museum exhibits.
- Supports and assists with the organization and care for the Roger Williams Park Museum collections.
- Supports Visitor Services with greeting visitors and selling tickets. Engages with visitors, answers questions, and fosters a positive and inclusive learning environment.
- Assists with publicizing education programs by creating content for social media marketing efforts.
- Successfully performs duties expeditiously and makes decisions in accordance with rules, regulations, departmental policies and procedures.
- Responsible to carry out all assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, museum education, or a natural science-related field.
- Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in formal or informal education settings with broad based knowledge of and demonstrated interest in science.
- Computer proficiency and expertise in office productivity software including Microsoft Office, social media marketing, and Adobe Suite.
- Experience delivering programming to groups of people; experience working with the general public, school groups, and/or volunteers.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills; excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Must be able to develop, create, and facilitate a 20-minute hands-on inquiry and standard-based STEM program for children in grades K-8 as part of the application process.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
