Job Summary
The Deputy Superintendent of Parks reports to the Superintendent of Parks and plays a key leadership role within the Providence Parks Department. This position is responsible for managing the operations divisions, ensuring the effective maintenance and stewardship of all park facilities citywide. Additionally, the Deputy Superintendent provides technical oversight for all park improvement projects, ensuring that design, project management and construction efforts align with department goals and standards.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists the Superintendent by providing leadership for department personnel responsible for park design, project management, maintenance, and programming across all park spaces and facilities in the City of Providence.
- Manages the operations division, overseeing the maintenance and daily management of neighborhood parks, Roger Williams Park, North Burial Ground, the Museum of Natural History, the City Center Rink, and the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center.
- Provides technical oversight for all park improvement projects, ensuring compliance with design standards, construction best practices, and operational feasibility.
- Develops partnerships with other City departments, elected officials, and non-governmental organizations to support park initiatives.
- Assists in monitoring and managing personnel and fiscal matters, ensuring operational efficiency and budgetary compliance.
- Participates in strategic and long-range planning for the department.
- Represents the department in meetings with other agencies, community groups, and stakeholders.
- Manages operations division directors and assists in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures.
- Manages the procurement process through the Board of Contract and Supply, including financial records and payments, awards and contracts.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or a combination of education and experience sufficient to qualify for this position.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in parks administration, construction management, landscape design, or public planning fields.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience managing large-scale construction projects.
- Demonstrated community engagement and public speaking skills.
- Strong management and leadership skills, with experience overseeing operations and project implementation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certification preferred but not required.
- Must be able to perform all essential job functions.
