Job Summary
Under supervision of the Supervisor of Structures and Zoning or the Chief of Structures and Zoning or the Building Official or the Director of Inspection and Standards, is responsible for permits, raze and sign permits, zoning certificates, and other applications; providing general information regarding Providence Zoning Ordinance, Rhode Island State Building Code and other applicable codes, standards and ordinances.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for taking permits at the counter and reviewing permits submitted on-line.
- Files reports of work being performed under all permits issued by the Department.
- Files reports with permit applications for Providence Bureau of Licenses to maintain the current status of licenses.
- Processes permit applications, certificates of occupancy and other forms and applications used by the Departments Divisions as assigned by a supervisor.
- Performs data entry to permit database revenue spreadsheets and other computer on-screen forms.
- Is responsible for performing all Senior Department Clerk level duties as outlined in that job description.
- Researches and assembles all pertinent correspondence, data, documents and other material necessary to assist in administrative superior.
- Responsible for developing a working knowledge of all Department programs, procedures and policies.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Â High School graduate or equivalent.
- A minimum of two (2) years experience in progressively responsible positions in the office of Building Inspection.
- Working knowledge of the department’s software within (1) month of appointment. Successful completion of entry level training in Microsoft: Outlook, Word, and Excel within (3) three months of appointment. Completion of intermediate training in Microsoft: Word and Excel within six (6) months of appointment.
- Ability to process all permit applications pertaining to the Department and related duties.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously both orally and in writing.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
