Job Summary

Under supervision of up-line management, Meter Reader I is responsible for following an assigned route, reading and recording water meter readings, maintaining records; ascertaining that the meter is not leaking, glass is not broker, and that the seal is properly placed.  Meter Reader I makes daily reports of readings and special reports of meter defects and/or any readings that are inconsistent with readings for the same period in the previous year.

Upon successful completion of the Meter Reader Technician written and field reviews, a Meter Reader I will be promoted to Meter Reader Technician, and will also perform the additional duties of servicing, repairs, and/or replacement of meter reading equipment, shop repairs, and related work as required.

Successfully complete the Meter Reader Technician written review within first 3 months of hire/transfer and successfully complete the Meter Reader Technician field review prior to a 6 month probationary period. $25.078/hour

 

Duties & Responsibilities

Meter Reader I

  1. Reads, interprets, and records meter readings.
  2. Enters readings into an electronic data storage device.
  3. Completes records and makes reports.
  4. Complies with rules and regulations governing the installation of water meters.
  5. Adheres to all Providence Water safety procedures.
  6. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Meter Reader Technician

  1. Obtains accurate meter readings directly or with reading device.
  2. Reads all meters on scheduled routes as assigned; reads meter pits.
  3. Makes necessary repairs to electronic meter reading equipment in field and mechanical repairs in meter shop.
  4. Troubleshoots and repairs electronic devices with account information.
  5. Works with, keeps track of, and maintains a wide variety of tools and equipment related to the repair of electronic reading devices.
  6. Installs and/or repairs threaded shut-off valves 2’ and below before and after the meter. Sizes should include, but not be limited to, ½”, ¾”, 1”, and 2” threaded shut-off valves.
  7. Installs and/or replaces batteries for the Electronic Radio Transmitters (ERTs), as well as ERTs.
  8. With two week’s advance notice, may be required to work Tuesday—Saturday (1st Shift) schedule.
  9. Performs office work within classification and completes records related to assigned duties.
  10. Adheres to all Providence Water safety procedures.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Meter Reader I

  1.  High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License and is responsible to maintain all vehicles maintenance logs.
  3. Must be able to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
  4. Must be able to communication effectively and courteously; be personally neat and possess absolute reliability and honesty.
  5. Must be able to work during inclement weather conditions as required.
  6. Flexibility to rotate between three (3) shifts and to work a non-standard workweek if required.
  7. With two week’s advance notice, required to work an alternate workweek of Tuesday—Saturday (1st Shift), as needed.
  8. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
  9. Must be able to pass all requirements and conditions to be fitted to wear the appropriate job required respirator.

Meter Reader Technician  

  1. With two week’s advance notice, required to work an alternate workweek of Tuesday through Saturday, as needed.

Training Requirements

Upon Appointment:  

  1. Customer Service Training
  2. Sexual Harassment, Sensitivity, and Diversity Training
  3. Within the first 3 months of hire and/or transfer, the candidate must successfully complete the Meter Reader Technician written review with a minimum score of 80%.
  4. Prior to the expiration of a 6-month probationary period the candidate must successfully complete the Meter Reader Technician field review.  Failure to successfully complete either review in the above stated time frames will result in the immediate transfer to a vacant funded entry level position, if available, and at the corresponding rate of pay, transfer back to previous position if available or be subject to termination.

Sustainment:

  1. Participation in customer service training every 24 months.
  2. Must maintain a valid State Driver’s License.
  3. Must be able to pass all requirements and conditions to be fitted to wear the appropriate job required respirator.

 

The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
