Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Director of Public Works or designee shall carry out, monitor, and enforce all environmental rules and regulations of the Department of Public Works and the City of Providence.

This position is first shift 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for the inspection of all properties, either occupied or vacant, for compliance with applicable City regulations including, but not limited to, placement of refuse, littering, trash compactors/dumpsters/containers, sanitation, recycling, rodent and vermin control, and vegetative and brush control.
  2. Issues environmental citations for violations of applicable departmental rules and regulations, as well as City ordinances.
  3. Will appear, as required, at Municipal Court to testify for environmental hearings or environmental citations.
  4. Implements and carries out educational programs and methodologies in conjunction with the Director’s office, Department of Public Works, and others.
  5. Utilizes computer system, and handheld devices to issue, track, and process environmental citations.
  6. Conducts detailed investigation into cited properties including follow-up, testifying in court as needed, and working with other departments personnel.
  7. Maintains daily logs and records of daily duties and activities
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Working knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques of environmental rules, regulations, programs, and methodologies pertaining to the work.
  3. Must be able to maintain accurate, detailed logs and records.
  4. Must be able to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
  5. Must be able to carry out manual tasks.
  6. Must possess and maintain a valid State Vehicle Operator’s License.
  7. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.

Training Requirements

Sustainment:  

  1. Must maintain a valid State Vehicle Operator’s License.

The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
