Job Summary
Performs difficult and complex engineering work at the professional level involving extensive responsibility for specific engineering activities, programs, and projects of the City with minimal supervision; and related work as required.
This position is from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Directs others and participates in the development and execution of engineering designs; performs computations; construction drawing layouts; develops specification; prepares quantity and cost estimates; and inspects and supervises of all types of construction and maintenance work as required.
- Conducts and directs hydraulic computations and studies relative to rainfall, runoff, storage draft, and yield data.
- Coordinates and performs flow and pressure tests, calculates results, and prepares reports.
- Installs and monitors sensitive automatic pressure reading equipment as required; interprets charts derived from this activity and prepares written technical summaries of results.
- Prepares graphical and tabular analyses of research, studies relative to population, and other long-range load or demand projections.
- Prepares sketches for the creation of engineering maps and construction drawings and supervises drafting personnel who prepare them in final form and other technical and sub-professional engineering staff.
- Supervises activities related to records maintenance and expansion of water service area as directed.
- Prepares and maintains vital engineering records and reports both manually and with electronic computers.
- Coordinates efforts with other City agencies as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent with a minimum of twenty (20) years of progressively advanced experience in engineering work of a character and grade demonstrating achievements, abilities, and knowledge applicable to the public works or water works fields of operation; preferably a graduate of an accredited college or university with an engineering curriculum of four (4) years or more as approved by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers together with eight (8) additional years of satisfactory engineering experience.
- Certification as a registered engineer licensed to practice in the State of Rhode Island.
- Theoretical and applicable knowledge of the basic principles and practices of the engineering sciences.
- Complete working knowledge or experience gained in the materials, methods, design, construction, operation, techniques and maintenance of large-scale engineering and construction projects.
- Ability to evaluate, through experience, and apply modern engineering practices and advanced techniques to plan daily work with fellow employees and supervise their work, maintain cooperative relationships with others, and be sensitive to public relations.
- Possess excellent oral communications and writing skills.
- Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
