Job Summary

Under direct supervision of the Shop Supervisor performs responsible, skilled work in the maintenance and repair of specialized automotive fire apparatus, equipment, public safety vehicles, fixtures, and appurtenances; specific assignments may include working from plans, sketches, blueprints, or oral/written instructions; work is usually performed independently but may be assigned as a team for large/complex assignments.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1.  Performs skilled and precision bench, power/hand tool and machine work in making repairs; repair and maintenance will include gasoline and diesel engines, component parts, transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering and their components.
  2. Makes repairs to fenders, bodies, cabs, and auxiliary attachments to fire apparatus, trucks, vehicles, aerial ladders, fire pumps, hydraulic systems, and other similar equipment.
  3. Requests parts, supplies, and materials needed to perform required repairs.
  4. Builds or repairs boxes, containers, and appurtenances.
  5. Operates automotive and machine tools and equipment; performs skilled non-fabricating electric or acetylene welding operations.
  6. Will inspect vehicles for Rhode Island State Certification.
  7. Shall assure work crews utilize safety attire and equipment and shall coordinate all safety related items with the Joint Labor/Managerial Safety Committee.
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned, including required documentation as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or equivalent including supplemental courses related to the trade.
  2. Minimum of two (2) years on-the-job experience with an established business, agency, or governmental agency engaged in major automotive repair and maintenance work or service as part of its regular work force.
  3. Must be ASE certified (basic mechanics) and must obtain ASE certification (diesel) within 60 days of appointment.
  4. Must possess Rhode Island Safety Inspection Certificate (blue card).
  5. Must possess Rhode Island Emissions and Safety Certification for inspection machines.
  6. Successful completion of Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification within sixty (60) days of appointment.
  7. Successful completion of Work Zone Safety Training within ninety (90) days of appointment. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  8. Experience on all shop diagnostic computers and machines for use on trucks and cars.
  9. Thorough working knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine repair and maintenance and of the standard practices, materials, methods, and tools of the automotive mechanical trades.
  10. Skilled in the use, operation, and care of hand tools, power tools and machines, and the equipment of the mechanical and machinist trades.
  11. Skill in acetylene and electric arc welding and in the use and maintenance of welding equipment and supplies.
  12. Knowledge of the operating principles of a wide variety of machinery and machine equipment.
  13. Ability to work from plans, sketches, or blueprints and from worn and broken parts.
  14. Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
  15. Knowledge of welding and fabrication; ability to design and construct special equipment and to fabricate parts when necessary.
  16. Skill in locating defects in equipment and parts in determining quality of repair work.
  17. Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement within six months of appointment. Candidates who possess the CDL at the time of application will be given preference in hiring.
  18. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
  19. Must be available for reasonable overtime.

Training Requirements

The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
