Job Summary

Under supervision of up-line management, is responsible to identify and repair all mechanical defects in a highly diversified group of automotive and specialized gasoline and/or diesel, alternate fueled vehicles, powered equipment, small engines, and tools; is responsible to coordinate and implement a preventative maintenance program relating to automotive and gasoline and/or diesel, alternate fueled vehicles, powered equipment, trucks, tractors, air compressors, lawn maintenance equipment, chainsaws, brush cutters, and other water related hand tools for operational readiness; will be required to exercise independent judgment on certain repairs and work may be subject to administrative review to ensure efficiency in repair and maintenance procedures; performs other related duties throughout the various facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Receives job orders pertaining to maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks, and equipment.
  2. Responsible for locating and correcting defects, testing, and approving the return to service of gasoline, diesel or alternate fueled powered equipment such as automobiles, trucks, tractors, air compressors, power lawn mowers, and pumps.
  3. Responsible for maintaining equipment such as lawn maintenance equipment, chainsaws, brush cutters, brush-chipping equipment, and hand tools, etc.
  4. Performs non-fabricated welding as needed.
  5. Requisitions parts, materials, and/or supplies as necessary.
  6. Inspects and tests work when finished to ascertain that equipment is ready to be returned to service.
  7. Responsible for proper care and maintenance of tools and work area.
  8. During emergency operations, may serve as equipment operator.
  9. Will be scheduled to work 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift as indicated on the vacancy posting.
  10. Adheres to all Providence Water safety procedures.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Experience as a skilled mechanic engaged in repairing and maintaining a wide variety of equipment, including some supervisory experience, with the ability to inspect the work of other mechanics.
  3. Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License and is responsible to maintain all vehicles maintenance logs.
  4. Must be able to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with air brake endorsement within six months of appointment.  Candidates who possess the CDL at the time of application will be given preference in hiring.
  5. Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment of the automobile mechanic trade; considerable knowledge of the principles and all mechanics of internal combustion and diesel engines.
  6. Knowledge of non-fabricating welding and forging methods and techniques.
  7. Ability to maintain automated maintenance and inventory control system.
  8. Experience and skill in locating and correcting defects in automotive and auxiliary equipment.
  9. Experience and skill in the use and care of the standard tools and equipment of the trade and in the operation of the machines and equipment used in testing, repairing, and adjusting engines and parts.
  10. Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
  11. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
  12. ASE certified applicants are preferred.
  13. Ability to become a licensed Rhode Island Vehicle Inspector Certification. Certified to inspect light and medium duty vehicles including diesel powered trucks and equipment. Achieved within one 90 days of appointment.
  14. Minimum of two (2) years on-the-job experience with an established business, agency, or governmental agency engaged in major automotive repair and maintenance work or service as part of its regular work force.

Training Requirements

 Upon Appointment:  

  1. Customer Service Training
  2. Sexual Harassment, Sensitivity, and Diversity Training
  3. Within 90 Days of appointment, hire or transfer, must obtain and maintain State Hoisting Engineer’s license for operation of Backhoe/Pay loader and a Forklift Operator’s certification.

Sustainment:

  1. Participation in customer service training every 24 months.
  2. Must maintain a valid State Driver’s License.
  3. Must maintain a valid State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B, with air-brake endorsement.
  4. Must maintain Rhode Island Automotive Inspector certification; be certified to inspect light and medium duty vehicles, including diesel powered trucks and equipment.
  5. Must maintain State Hoisting Engineer’s license for operation of Backhoe/Pay loader and a Forklift Operator’s certification.

The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
