Job Summary
Under supervision of the Alternate Building Official, or the Building Official or the Deputy Director or the Director, Department of Inspection and Standards, responsible for the processing of building permits, licenses, and notices of violations; reviewing plans, inspection of building construction and alterations for compliance with the Rhode Island State Building Codes and Providence Zoning Ordinance; field inspections of properties in violation of the Building Codes and Zoning Ordinance.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintains accurate permanent records of calculations on all important structures.
- Provides information to architects, engineers, contractors, and members of the general public with respect to the requirements of the Rhode Island State Building Code, Providence Zoning Ordinance, and other related City ordinances and State laws.
- Responsible for performing plan review of residential buildings and commercial buildings which requires a thorough knowledge of Rhode Island State Building Code.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of experience in designing or reviewing plans and specifications of buildings and other structures.
- Working knowledge of data bases, and software typically used in the management of projects and office operations, such as Micorosoft: Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Must be certified as a Rhode Island Plans Examiner I or able to obtain within 4 months; State Certifications have separate requirements that must be maintained and completed independently. All certifications are a prerequisite of this position.
- Must have the following certification: (or the ability to obtain within 12 months from date of appointment)
- ICC Residential Plans Examiner
- Must have a thorough knowledge of the Rhode Island State Building Code, Providence Zoning Ordinance, and other laws and ordinances that are enforced by the Division of Structures and Zoning.
- Must possess excellent oral communication and writing skills.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
Training Requirements
The term “limited” means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
