Job Summary
The Communications Associate works in the Mayor’s Communications Office to assist and support in the implementation of communications and outreach campaigns for the various initiatives of the Administration and City Departments.
The Communication Associate’s portfolio includes a particular emphasis on research, translation, production of written materials, Latino media relations and media tracking for the Communications Office.
The Communications Associate reports to the Communications Director and works in a demanding, fast-paced office.
The successful candidate will demonstrate editorial and visual sensibility, the ability to meet tight deadlines, an understanding of how to effectively communicate public information through multimedia and social media platforms, and a willingness to develop and learn new skills on the job.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist in the distribution of information (visual and print) through the City’s website and social media, including maintaining content and monthly metrics reports
- Assist in the production of written materials and digital content creation
- Assists in website management and updates
- Assists with research and background preparation including talking points, as needed
- Assists in drafting press releases, advisories, newsletters and other communications materials as needed
- Produce timely and concise communications and materials accurately and under often tight deadlines
- Maintain in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Administration and Departmental priorities and initiatives
- Maintain availability to work on a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, as needed
- Provide daily news media monitoring reports to staff
- Translate visual and printed materials created by the Communications Department and other City Departments as needed
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Communications Director
- Serve as point of contact for all Latino media, locally, regionally and nationally.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications/political science or related fields and 1-3 years professional experience on a campaign, working with an elected official or with a policy organization (or a sufficient combination of both)
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Acute cross-cultural awareness, with a demonstrated ability to center equity in communications and engagement
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Facebook, X (Twitter) and other social media platforms
- Experience with bilingual communication strategies and demonstrated success communicating to a diverse constituency across multiple platforms
- Fluency and proficiency in all areas of Spanish, both spoken and written
