Job Summary

The Senior Advisor for External Affairs is a pivotal role within the Providence City Council leadership team, responsible for forging and nurturing relationships with a diverse range of external partners, from local non-profits to national think tanks. This position involves identifying experts who can contribute to the development of progressive initiatives and collaborating with community partners at local, state, and national levels to build the support necessary to enact these initiatives. The role requires significant experience in political and community organizing, with additional policy and communications experience preferred.

Duties & Responsibilities

include but are not limited to the following:
  1. Engagement with External Partners:
    • Establish and maintain meaningful relationships with a variety of external partners including local non-profits, advocacy groups, and national think tanks.
    • Identify and engage with experts who can provide valuable insights and assistance in developing bold progressive initiatives.
  2. Policy Development and Support:
    • Collaborate with council members, external partners, and council policy staff to inform, develop, and refine progressive policy initiatives.
    • Provide strategic advice on policy matters, leveraging external expertise to support policy development.
  3. Community and Political Organizing:
    • Work with local, state, and national community partners to build coalitions and mobilize support for policy initiatives.
    • Coordinate and participate in community organizing activities, including outreach, events, and campaigns.
  4. Power Building and Advocacy:
    • Develop and implement strategies to build the necessary power to pass progressive initiatives.
    • Advocate for council policy initiatives at various levels of government and within the community.
  5. Communications:
    • Assist in crafting and disseminating messaging to effectively communicate policy initiatives to the public and stakeholders.
    • Support the Council’s communications efforts by providing content and strategic input.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Communications, or a related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of education.
  2. Significant experience in political and community organizing is required.
  3. Policy experience is preferred.
  4. Communications experience is a plus.
