Job Summary

The Policy Analyst is an engaging and dynamic member of the Providence City Council’s Policy Team, reporting to the Senior Director of Policy. This role involves conducting comprehensive policy research and analysis with a particular focus on active engagement with community organizations to shape and influence local policy initiatives. The Policy Analyst will provide insightful information and strategic support to council members, facilitating informed decision-making and fostering community involvement in legislative processes. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of shaping impactful city policies.

Duties & Responsibilities

include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Conduct detailed research and analysis on a variety of policy issues as assigned by the Senior Director of Policy and Deputy Director of Policy providing data-driven insights to support legislative development.
  2. Engage actively with community organizations and stakeholders to gather input and feedback that informs policy initiatives.
  3. Assist in scheduling staff-level meetings with external stakeholders and community organizations.
  4. Prepare policy briefs, position papers, and legislative summaries that clearly articulate the benefits and implications of proposed legislation.
  5. Assist in drafting and revising policy proposals and resolutions to ensure alignment with community needs and council objectives.
  6. Represent the City Council at community meetings and public forums, presenting policy proposals and gathering public input.
  7. Collaborate with the Policy Team and other council staff to prioritize policy initiatives and develop strategies for implementation.
  8. Support council members during committee meetings, public hearings, and other events by providing research and policy analysis and taking notes.
  9. Research, understand, and incorporate national best practices in policymaking.
  10. Assist in the creation and maintenance of an online database of pending resolutions and ordinances as a resource for council members and staff.
  11. Collaborate with Senior Director of Policy and Deputy Director of Policy to define and prioritize council policy initiatives.
  12. Develop and maintain relationships with external policy experts and organizations to enhance the council’s policy-making capacity.
  13. Perform additional duties as assigned to support the City Council’s strategic objectives and respond to evolving community needs.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Urban Planning, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience in public policy or government affairs.

 Skills:

  1. Strong analytical and research skills with the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable insights.
  2. Excellent writing and communication skills, capable of producing clear and persuasive policy documents.
  3. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced capabilities in Excel for data analysis.
  4. Ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including community groups, policy experts, and government officials.

 Interpersonal and Team Skills:

  1. Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proactive approach to building relationships and fostering community engagement.
  2. A strong understanding of municipal policy issues and a commitment to developing inclusive policies that address local needs.

 Physical Requirements:

  1. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job, including attending meetings and events outside of standard office hours.
