Job Summary

The Communications Coordinator is a vital member of the City Council’s communication team, reporting directly to the Director of Communications. This role involves assisting with various communication initiatives, including social media content, press releases, media inquiries, and promotion of council-related events.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Communications Support:
a. Develop and monitor engaging social media content aligned with the council’s communication strategy and guidelines.
b. Draft speaking points for council members and staff to ensure consistent messaging during public appearances and events.
c. Prepare high-quality briefing materials and outreach resources for various stakeholders, such as community groups and media outlets.
d. Conduct research on relevant topics and gather data to support effective communication initiatives.
e. Oversee the production of video content and photography, capturing key events and activities for promotional purposes.
f. Manage and update content on the council’s website, ensuring accurate and timely information dissemination.
g. Design visually appealing newsletters to keep constituents informed about council activities and updates.
h. Undertake light graphic design work to create visually impactful materials for communication purposes.

2. Community Outreach:
a. Engage in proactive outreach efforts to ensure the council office and constituents are well-informed about committee meetings, neighborhood gatherings, and other events.
b. Establish and maintain strong relationships with community stakeholders to foster open communication and encourage active participation in council initiatives.

3. Meeting and Event Support:
a. Provide support during council meetings, which may involve assisting with logistics, audio-visual setup, and document distribution.
b. Attend community meetings and events as requested, actively participating, and representing the council’s communication interests.
c. Transport necessary equipment, such as cameras, portable speakers, podiums, etc., to facilitate smooth event execution.

4. Availability and Flexibility:
a. Be prepared to participate in events that occur after regular working hours or on weekends, as required to fulfill communication responsibilities effectively.

5. Additional Duties:
a. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Communications and senior staff to contribute to the overall success of the council’s communication efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
2. Minimum of 4 years of demonstrated experience in a relevant field.
3. Strong writing and grammar skills.
4. Excellent verbal communication skills.
5. Exceptional organizational abilities, managing multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
6. Knowledge of the press, newsrooms, and public relations.
7. Proficiency in computer and social media skills, including Microsoft Office, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Familiarity with Constant Contact and Canva is a plus.
8. Familiarity with Providence and its unique neighborhoods.
9. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job as defined.
