Job Summary
The Operations Supervisor reports to the Manager – Water Plant Operations and is responsible for the day to day operations and maintenance of the water purification plant, pumping stations, and related facilities; scheduling and supervising the work of operations staff personnel; maintenance of asset management system; coordination with outside vendors; performing other related duties as assigned.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervises, directs the work, and closely monitors the performance of operations staff personnel.
- Provides technical direction to skilled and semi-skilled workers for the preventative maintenance and repairs of centralized filter controls, chemical feed systems, process control equipment, gauges and transmitters, motorized gates and valves, metering pumps, centrifugal pumping equipment, HVAC equipment, and all other plant, pump station and related facilities equipment.
- Prepares work orders and maintains records of completed assignments and activities.
- Prepares employee time records, performance appraisals, counseling, disciplinary actions, and provides personnel recommendations; responsible for all employee follow-up documentation and ensuring compliance with the bargaining unit collective bargaining agreement.
- Reads and utilizes record drawings and manuals related to plant operations and maintenance.
- Orders all supplies, equipment and materials required for day to day operations. Responsible for processing payment for such orders.
- Responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis. On-call duty is required and will be assigned on a rotating basis as scheduled within the department.
- Performs other operational and maintenance activities that may be required for the efficient operation of the plant, remote stations and related facilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with course work related to the technical sciences, or high school graduate or equivalent along with a minimum of five (5) years of experience in the various divisions of a water supply system.
- Must possess and maintain a Rhode Island Drinking Water Operator Certification, Class 3-T, or ability to obtain the certification within eighteen months of appointment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State Driver’s License.
- Experience reading and utilizing record drawings.
- Knowledge and understanding of SCADA systems.
- Must possess general computer skills; including experience with word processing, spreadsheets, email and calendar programs.
- Ability to supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate personnel.
- Ability to work with all department personnel in an effective, cooperative, and courteous manner.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal instruction or supervision.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job and at times under adverse weather conditions.
