Job Summary

Performs difficult and complex clerical tasks necessary to the Board of Canvassers’ mission of conducting and protecting the integrity of the electoral process and effectively and efficiently administering the provisions of the election laws of the United States and The State of Rhode Island.

This is a temporary appointment that will end on December 9, 2022. Any employment that occurs beyond this date will be on a week-to-week basis and cannot be interpreted as a guarantee of continued employment in this position.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Processes mail ballot applications, performs volume data entry, and recruits and coordinates with polling officials to ensure Election Day coverage.
2. Compiles, copies, sorts, files, and maintains documents and supporting files for accuracy and consistency.
3. Types or utilizes a personal computer to prepare correspondence, reports, documents, and forms.
4. Prepares a variety of reports.
5. Operates online data base used for voter registration; and Microsoft Office software to include word and excel.
6. Communicates with and assists customers to obtain information, respond to inquiries, and gather accurate and detailed information pertinent to complaints.
7. Researches non-technical information, prepares report of findings, and disseminates information to customers.
8. Works mandatory overtime as necessary to ensure the Board meets all legal obligations for fair elections.
9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Must have typing and/or data entry ability with a minimum of 42 words per minute.
3. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office or a comparable software suite.
4. Ability to communicate effectively and courteously to include the ability to be considerate and helpful to anxious and/or dissatisfied customers and candidates
5. Ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions.
6. Considerable skill and accuracy with basic mathematics, typing and data entry, and business English.
7. Ability to work cordially and collegially with customers, colleagues and officials in a very fast paced environment driven by critical deadlines.
8. Knowledge of office procedures, practices, and equipment.
9. Must be able to work mandatory unscheduled hours to include early morning, evenings and weekends.
10. Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
